His father, Charles Kushner, made his fortune in New Jersey real estate, and Jared took over the family business after his father was sent to federal prison in 2005. Jared Kushner made a splash on the New York scene by buying The New York Observer newspaper in 2006, and for completing a $1.8 billion deal for a Manhattan office building in 2007. In 2009 he married Ivanka Trump, the daughter of businessman Donald Trump, after she converted to Judaism. During the 2016 presidential election, Kushner emerged as one of Donald Trump’s closest advisers, and after Trump’s victory Kushner became an influential figure in Trump’s White House transition team. After Trump took office on January 20, 2017, he gave Kushner the title of Senior Advisor to the President.

His father, Charles Kushner, pled guilty to 18 counts of tax violations and of illegal campaign contributions, as well as for retaliation against a state witness — Charles Kushner hired a prostitute to seduce his own brother-in-law, in an effort to blackmail him and keep him from testifying. Charles Kushner served 14 months in federal prison.
